Aside from the story arc itself which is funny and heartbreaking and cathartic and frightening the brilliance is that I felt empathy for every one of the characters, even the two who would have simply been portrayed as the “big bads” in a lesser work. It is written with emotional honesty and vulnerability and that takes great courage and ability. Bottom line, Shipped Off made me laugh and cry and care. Yes, the mystery of what happens on this cruise ship will keep you turning the pages but it's the emotional depth that will stay with you after you complete this quick read. His narrative draws the reader in, and the book includes many suspenseful twists and turns. I couldn't put the book down! Franklin G. Shaw, the narrator, avoided the traps that narrators can easily fall into. His voice sounded natural and organic. He served as the conduit to the author's story, which is the narrator's goal. The emotion was very impactful because the narrator didn't overdo it and therefore avoided a huge trap. So many narrators approach narration from a stage background and read "for the back of the house." Wrong! The suspense of the story is built up through the use of multiple perspectives (of the main characters) and through the jumping back and forth in time. Two hours through the three hour audio there was a glitch (on my end) and I could feel my anxiety rise wondering whether I would be able to hear the last hour of the story. Thankfully customer support resolved that and I got to hear the end. I was clearly more engaged and invested than I even realized. "Shipped Off" is a good ride.
